Founded Ridgefield, Washington in 1945 by Leonard Sheon a Navy veteran, U-Haul is an equipment moving and storage rental Company placed in Phoenix, Arizona. Leonard Sheon’s son Joe Sheon is the current Chairman and CEO of the company. According to their Facebook page, U-Haul serves more than 11 million do-it- yourself household moving customers annually and their main objective is to provide better product service to more people at lower costs. They help their customers with moving and self-storage between 7AM-10PM MST. They do so by providing rental trucks for moving, storage containers, wiring accessories, LPG refueling, hitchers, moving supplies etc. It is owned by a holding company named AMRCO, which also deals with AMERCO Real Estate, Republic Western Insurance and Oxford Life Insurance. Over the years U-Haul has earned immense fame and loyalty among its customers that today, it is used as a genericized trademark or a brand name representing all rental companies in the country.
Products and Equipment
U-Haul provides its customers with various types of transport and moving equipment. U-Haul is also committed to make moving a more natural and eco-friendly process. Their motto is to reduce, rescue and recycle and hence, they provide fuel-efficient moving vans. They also believe in reusing their moving boxes and have come up with biodegradable packing peanuts. When U-Haul was originally founded, tired and gas were rationed or weren’t always available in bulk like today. And thus came the U-Haul Sustainability Program. The major goal of the same was, “Serving the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their needs.” They also received the ‘Alliance to Save Energy’s Galaxy Star of Energy Efficiency Award.’
The list of their equipment includes:
- Rental Trucks and Trailers
- U-Box portable storage containers
- Wiring and Wiring Accessories
- Biodegradable Packing Peanuts
- Moving Supplies
- Uhaulcarshare which is car sharing
- Recycled Furniture
- Moving Pads
- Sustainable Modular Storage
Their heavy duty trucks and vans are manufactured by GMC and Ford. All rental vehicles are powered by gas and all customers are requested to bring back their rental transport to the same location they rented it from. Their trucks are available in six sizes that range from 10 feet to 26 feet. And they also have multiple trailer sizes and two-wheeled Tow Dolly and four-wheeled Auto Transport. Some trucks also have something called ‘Mom’s Attic’ which is an over cab storage space.
In-Town Equipment: When a Customer rents the equipment from a particular location, he or she is required to drop off the rented U-Haul property in the same place again. And this equipment is generally used for local moves and hence includes locations that are close by to the nearest rental place.
One-Way Equipment: Unlike In-Town Equipment, a Customer can opt for On-Way equipment wherein he or she will rent the transport and required stuff from one place and makes the drop-off at a different location. This is probably useful when the customer is moving longer distances.
As of now, U Haul is building new One-Way equipment while the older equipment is being handed down to In-Town for local moving purposes. The previous In-Town equipment is being sold. All U-Haul corporation trucks hold apportioned Arizona license plates and they do not expire. Although the newer trailers hold license plates registered in several other states as well.
U-Haul also provides its customers with weekly or monthly self-storage rental lockers and portable monthly storage lockers. These storage facilities are located at most of their corporate locations.
The Moving Process
Being one of the most appealing choices to lean onto for moving purposes, U-Haul has always helped its movers and customers be efficient do-it- yourself movers. They make the moving process easier and help save a lot of money. They usually advise their customers before the process actually begins. They urge their movers to plan their move in advance and make reservations for the process at least four weeks ahead. U-Haul believes it’s always easier to avoid the weekend rush when everyone is busy. They have mentioned that the time between Sunday and Thursday offers their best equipment availability and the rates are usually lower during that time. Reservations for booking trucks are guaranteed but with some conditions. Regardless of when the customer submits a reservation, it’s not guaranteed until the day before the customer is scheduled to pick up the truck. At that time, a representative from the customer’s requested pick-up location will contact them to verify the equipment, the location, the date and the pick-up time. Once the deal is made and the customer and the representative agree, the reservation is considered guaranteed.
Selecting the boxes and other packing equipment well before the actual process always makes moving easier. That way the customer will find packing and unpack smooth and fast. U-Haul also urges its movers to conduct a walk around inspection of the equipment before pick-up so that the mover is familiar with how it’s done and used. U-Haul provides with 30-day free storage offer with a One-Way move. A one-way move with U-Haul means that the mover will have to interact with managers or employees at both the pick-up location and drop-off location. If he or she calls the national hotline or reserve online, once they submit the reservation, it is handed off to the rental location for handling. At the various locations, the mover may encounter different hours, procedures and policies based on where it is, so the customer is always requested make sure that they are aware of the specifics before booking for the One-Way equipment. For long distance moves which are usually One-Way, when the customer rents a truck, he or she will get an estimate of your U-Haul price and a summary of their rental. That summary includes the certain number of days and miles included. U-Haul determines these details based on where the customer is moving to and from where. If the mover requires additional days or additional miles, those will cost extra.
U-Haul offers various truck size options (10 foot, 15 foot, 17 foot, 20 foot and 26 foot) and hence it is extremely easy and helpful for a customer to pack and move with a truck that fits best for their belongings. All the trucks have low loading decks and hence it is very simple and non tedious for the mover to unload the belongings. Mentioned earlier, Mom’s Attic is extremely useful for loading fragile and brittle items because in that compartment the movement is scarce and the items are safe. Also, U-Haul provides with two-wheeled tow dollies and car carriers that can be used to haul personal vehicles. While moving, if anything happens to the equipment, the mover can call a toll-free number or go to the U-Haul website and request round-the- clock roadside assistance. For One-Way, after finishing the process the customer can call U-Haul and find out the nearest company location from their place.
Moving is always such a tiring and taxing process. It takes away a lot of energy from a person and is simply exhausting. From packing things to labeling them and then hauling vehicles for the move or calling for trucks and hitchers, moving always wears out a being. When a customer opts for a Moving company that does all the work for them, there is no prior reassurance that the belongings will reach home safely without any damages. The customers are on constant alert, while the process is going on. They follow the truck carefully, make sure it’s going the right pace and are always worried that their fragile items will break, despite the quality packing and safety measures.
But U-Haul is such a relieving alternative. It is widespread and ubiquitous. It’s a possibility that a person will find a U-Haul truck while they’re on the road to some place and that’s exactly how reliable it is. It provides the movers with great, wide-ranging transport and stationary equipment that is eco-friendly and smart. It gives them, the movers the freedom to select the equipment based on their belongings and is very cost effective. U-Haul helps the customers become efficient do-it- yourself movers, wherein the entire process is in their hands. They relish the fact that the moving truck can be driven at their own required pace, their belongings under their own eye and they can pack and move at their own stride.
Despite having over 16,000 Moving and Storage Companies all over the United States of America, U-Haul has cemented a unique place for itself in the market. Like mentioned earlier, U-Haul has become a brand name that represents any Moving company in the USA. When a customer talks about moving, U-Haul is probably the first thing that comes into their minds. It is evident how much trust and reliability the wonderful moving company has earned over the 71 years of its foundation. This can be accounted for by just seeing the many One-Way trucks that move down the roads with do-it- yourself movers managing their own moving process.
